Computing Integrated Teacher Education is a four-year initiative to support CUNY education faculty at all ranks to integrate state standards-aligned computing and digital literacies content and pedagogy into required education courses, field work and student teaching.
Supported by public funding from the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) Computer Science for All (CS4All) program and private funding from the Robin Hood Learning + Technology Fund, Google, and Gotham Gives, the initiative focuses on building on and complementing the success of New York City’s CS4All and pilots to integrate computational thinking at Queens College, Hunter College and Hostos Community College.
The initiative focuses on:
- Supporting institutional change in teacher education programs to integrate computing and digital literacies
- Building faculty computing and digital literacies pedagogical content knowledge through the lens of equitable, culturally relevant and sustaining education
- Supporting faculty research in equitable computing education, inclusive STEM pedagogies, and effects on their students’ instructional practices
CUNY faculty and other participants in the CITE initiative are working together to answer the question:
How do/might programs and colleges of education working within CUNY prepare educators to equitably and meaningfully integrate computing and digital literacies into public school classrooms?
As we do so, we…
- value the holistic journey of educators (across all components of their learning, work and experiences as teachers. We consider teachers’ learning journeys as they are today, as well as those journeys that could or might be.
- integrate computing and digital literacies not for the sake of it, but to support equity-centered and culturally sustaining teaching and learning for teacher candidates and their K-12 learners.
- cultivate a spirit of curiosity and tinkering for faculty, Teacher Candidates and K-12 Students
- welcome iteration, critical reflection, constructive feedback, and continuous improvement
- take our time
